Cable/Harness Testing Made Easy.

Consider the many ways a cable/harness can fail electrical testing: shorts, opens, miswires, connection resistance too high, insulation resistance too low and more.   Our newsletter series on improving quality continues with the process of getting value from your BAD cable/harness assemblies.

Last month we asked about your practice measuring defective assemblies. Additionally, we surveyed a number of customers to find out what metrics they use in testing. We found that First Pass Yield (FPY) is popular. A few customers divide by the number of opportunities. Those who do usually just divide by the number of connections in the assembly to determine their failure rates. See:

One of our success stories with FPY

Improve the quality of your assemblies.

First an embarrassing in-house story from years ago. We wind and terminate a small transformer, which is used in our cable testers. Over time, the first pass yield had fallen to 70%. Assemblers did not know what was wrong, or how to fix them. This transformer also had a high failure rate in testers returned for service.

Today we have >99% FPY and do not see field failures in these transformers. What changed? We have a story to share about how we achieved such success and how it relates to getting your cables to consistently pass. See:
